Right to Choose for ADHD assessment in England
The useful starting point is the NHS patient choice rule, then the current referral requirements of the provider you are considering.
The short answer
In England, a legal right to choose may apply when a GP makes a clinically appropriate referral for a first outpatient mental health appointment. Remote ADHD assessment services can fall within this framework if the provider holds the required NHS contract. The right does not extend to self-referral, and exceptions apply.
Who the right applies to
Right to Choose is part of the NHS patient choice framework in England. It is relevant when a GP, dentist or optometrist is making an eligible referral. For ADHD, the usual route is through a GP.
It does not create a UK-wide right. Health services and referral rules differ in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
The provider must qualify
NHS England says a provider must hold a current qualifying NHS Standard Contract for the service and location concerned. The referral must also be clinically appropriate. A provider being private in another part of its work does not, by itself, make every service available through Right to Choose.
Provider lists, age ranges, medication arrangements and waiting times change. Check the provider's current NHS pathway page rather than relying on an old directory or social media post.
Right to Choose is not self-referral
The NHS England patient choice guidance states that the legal right does not extend to self-referrals. You can identify a provider and ask your GP to consider it, but the GP remains responsible for deciding whether referral is clinically appropriate.
Bring the provider's current referral form or instructions. Ask whether the referral includes assessment only or any treatment that may follow, and how prescribing would work if medication were recommended.
Waiting times need a date and source
The NHS adult ADHD page says waits can be several months or years and suggests discussing clinics with shorter lists through Right to Choose. A provider's quoted wait is a snapshot, not a promise. Check what stage the estimate covers, such as triage, assessment or medication titration.

Private self-referral is separate
You can choose to pay for a private assessment without using Right to Choose. NeuroFX accepts private self-referrals for full ADHD assessment. That route is separate from NHS funding, and you should check fees, treatment arrangements and communication with your GP before booking.
